In the 11 years since the death of Paul Mc Girr, best remembered as a Tyrone county minor, many things have changed in the world of GAA. The influence of this minor player has been felt deeply at all levels within the sport. The Tyrone team with which he played has gone onto All-Ireland glory at Minor, U-21 and Senior levels, with Paul’s memory evoked by Peter Canavan in accepting the Sam Maguire in 2003. A juvenile tournament, organised & hosted by St Dympna’s Dromore, for the county champions throughout Ulster, has been held successfully for the past ten years. | |
The young people of Dromore, on the 10th Anniversary of his death, have set up a group called The Spirit of Paul McGirr. The group aims to raise both funds and volunteers to support communities of Lusaka, Zambia. The SMA Missionary Priests and Friends of Africa are already well established in Zambia and have founded many worthwhile and productive projects where the need is most urgent. Most initiatives involve the training of the young generation in the skills they need to be self sustaining; bricklaying, baking, sewing, horticulture, farming, carpentry etc.
The Spirit of Paul McGirr has the full support of Paul’s parents, Francis and Rita, brothers and sisters, Gerard, Michael, Katrina, Fionnuala, Joan and the wider family circle. ETHOS “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but teach him to fish and you feed him for life.” Our aim is to serve the needs of the people of Lusaka, Zambia and offer them some of the resources necessary to improve themselves, their families and their community. Our underlying motivation and the steadfast commitment we will apply in our efforts will ultimately be “The Spirit Of Paul McGirr”. The Spirit of Paul Mc Girr aims to raise funds but also seeks donations of equipment and volunteers to go to Africa to work. (See Contact Us)
We extend special thanks to all those who have contributed to The Spirit of Paul McGirr and also to all those who have organised fundraising events and generously donated the proceeds to these worthwhile projects. Commitee Members - Michael McGirr
