Football Tournament PDF Print E-mail

The Paul McGirr Memorial Tournament commenced in 1998.  The Tyrone Association in Dublin presented to our club a magnificent perpetual trophy: A Cuchulan Bronze (as in Dublin G.P.O) mounted on Irish Oak, to be competed for in Paul’s memory.  At the request of Paul’s parents Rita and Francie the tournament is played for at youth level.  We invite, from each county, the U-16 champions of the previous year so the tournament is at U-17 level.

 Perpetual Trophy

The perpetual trophy is held for one year by the winning team.  The winning team also receives an engraved Tyrone Crystal Trophy and medals go to both the winners and the runners up.  For the past two years local businessman Adrian O’Neill has sponsored the trophies and medals for the final.  Commencing with the 2007 tournament the winners will receive especially commissioned medals.

No expenses are paid to the competing teams as all profits from the tournament have been, (until 2007), presented by the Mc Girr family to the SMA missions in Zambia through Friends of Africa.  Tournament profits from 2006 have been forwarded to the newly established local group “The Spirit of Paul McGirr” as will the profits from the 2007 tournament.
